FastTrack Phonics
Aimed at Year 1

DfES Synthetic Phonics Assessment Compliant

FastTrack Phonics has been developed to provide children with a "jump start" to letter-sound correspondence and blending which is the ignition to all reading and spelling. It is intensive, systematic and yet enjoyable to teach. There is something for every child from nursery through to those children still experiencing problems with reading and spelling at the top end of the primary school.

Using sounds to read and spell words is one of the most common problems that readers encounter when first learning to read. FastTrack Phonics can help to better prepare children to face this challenge and provide them with the skills that are the building blocks of using sounds to read and spell words.

The Goal:

Beginning readers empowered with the knowledge of letters, sounds and sound blending skills.

The Solution:

A fun, fast-paced and systematic phonics programme that builds childrens skills in phonemic awareness, letter-sound correspondence, word-level blending and segmenting and beginning spelling.

FastTrack Phonics is designed for classrooms in which children are just beginning to read.  The sequence of lessons starts with the phonemic awareness skills of hearing initial sounds, and auditory blending and segmenting.  Detailed lesson plans guide teachers as they teach phonemes and letter-sound correspondences.  Beginning word structure skills including adding endings and recognising compound words are also introduced.  The lessons are appropriate for a variety of age groups and are flexible enough to be customised to the needs of a particular child, class or group.  Group response routines and co-operative learning activities engage all children in the lessons.  Frequent assessment guides instruction so that teachers can ensure pupil mastery.

Instructional Materials:

  • Manuals - A set of three manuals that provide daily lessons and assessment materials.

  • Key Cards - Colour key cards that link sounds and letters together to cement letter/sound correspondences in children's minds.

  • Partner Practice Booklets - Powerful interactive practice activities to build mastery.

  • Letter-Blending Decks - Letter and letter-combination cards teachers use to demonstrate sound blending.

  • Phonics Picture Card Set - Colour picture cards used in phonemic awareness and phonics activities.

Professional Development:

The Success for All trainer builds a partnership with your school through training sessions, onsite training and telephone support.  The Professional development provided by the SFA Consultant is designed to support school leaders and teachers as they make substantial changes in their approach to classroom instruction.

  • Initial Training -
The half-day onsite initial training prepares teachers to implement FastTrack Phonics.  The training will focus on:
       * Phonemic awareness, decoding and word recognition strategies.
       * Elements of lessons that provide engaging images, routines and practice needed to ensure success for each child.
       * Assessment processes and adaptations to lessons based on assessments to meet individual and group needs.
       * Training in beginning levels of co-operative learning.
       * Support for administrators on monitoring and improving programme implementation.

  • Goal-Focused Achievement Planning -
Goal-focused achievement planning sets the stage for success.  School leaders and your SFA Consultant develop specific goals and monitor children's progress.
       * Your Trainer works with teachers to review children's data, set goals for progress and develop plans for achieving those goals.
       * Every 8 weeks teachers, school leaders and the SFA Consultant review pupil progress data.
       * Goals for interventions for the following quarter are planned based on the data.

  • Ongoing Training and Support
As the year progresses your SFA Consultant will have a variety of ways to work with you to review your progress, refine your goals and strengthen your instruction.
       * Following initial planning, telephone meetings to answer questions and troubleshooting will be scheduled.
       * At least one support visit each year is recommended to observe children's reading in classrooms, meet with teachers and administrators, review data on children's progress and set new goals (£250 per half day).
       * Unlimited, informal telephone support is available for all staff members.
