Literacy
Wings
Years 2-6 |
|
Literacy Wings supports and challenges both basic and more competent
readers and develops their skills through reading a
wide range of carefully selected literature including fiction,
non-fiction and poetry. In most cases children read the whole
book.
|
The books are supported by well-thought-out, structured teaching
materials that stimulate discussion about the text, increase
children's vocabulary, focus on the understanding of different
literary devices and key reading skills. The materials also
provide highly-
structured writing activities based on the texts with the
opportunity for extra extended writing interspersed between
them. |
 |
|
The five levels of materials include detailed daily lesson plans
for teachers, pupil materials that support them, resources for
photocopying, as well as manuals for extended writing and
grammar-for-editing. Schools would need to purchase sets of real
books for group reading and some single copies for Shared Text.

Professional
Development:
Success for All builds a partnership with your school through training sessions, onsite training, scheduled telephone meetings and informal telephone support. Training sessions are developed in conjunction with school management and are customised to the needs of your staff.
-
Initial Training - £650 full
day -
The initial training, prepares teachers to implement the Wings
programme.
The training focuses on:
* Co-operative learning structures and processes where children work in learning teams of four. The children in each team are not only responsible for mastering the knowledge, skills and understanding themselves, but also for helping their team-mates learn.
*The structure of the Wings lesson, which is taught over 5 days using a “Treasure Hunt”, which is the detailed planning for teachers.
* Teaching and modelling to the children the core comprehension strategies of clarification, questioning, summarising and prediction..
* How to assess children in the Wings programme every eight weeks.
-
Goal-Focused Achievement Planning
-
Goal-focused achievement planning sets the stage for success. School leaders and your SFA Consultant develop specific goals and monitor pupil progress.
* Every eight weeks, Wings teachers, management and SFA consultants review children's progress data.
* Goals and interventions for the following eight weeks are planned based on the data.
-
Ongoing Training and Support -
As the year progresses you will have a variety of ways to work with your SFA Consultant to review your progress and refine your goals. Your school receives:
* Telephone support to answer questions and troubleshoot.
* At least one support visit each year is recommended to observe children's reading in classrooms, meet with teachers and administrators, review data on children's progress and set new goals (£250 per half day).
* Unlimited, informal telephone support for all staff members.
